Abstract

Higher education plays an important role in the development of any nation. It is responsible for the social and economic development of any region. The total quality management in higher education is affected by a number of factors. This is especially true in a developing country like India, where socio-cultural forces are dominant. Mostly socio-cultural factors are responsible for lower enrolment. Also may of the good students are deprived of higher education because of the above said factors. Had they been in the system of higher education, they would have contributed immensely towards the quality improvement. Thus improving the social cultural factors will lead to better inputs, in terms of better students, would mostly, naturally, lead to better output and performance. This will in turn improve the total quality in higher educational services. The paper attempts to find these factors on the higher education scenario in the country.

Key words: development, total quality management, socio-cultural, improvement, higher education.
